Sheltered from coastal development and steeped in an aura from decades ago, north central Florida’s Gainesville and Alachua County remain embellished with Spanish moss hanging from trees, especially on country roads outside town. Among top attractions is the Florida Museum of Natural History, now home to the permanent Butterfly Rainforest, a screened vivarium housing subtropical and tropical plants and trees to support dozens of species of free-flying butterflies. Alachua’s historic Micanopy, founded in 1821, is believed to be the oldest inland town in Florida. The Micanopy Historical Society Museum, within what’s known as the Thrasher Warehouse, is one of 39 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
